Rachel is based on a photograph I took of a classmate on black and white 35mm film when I studied abroad in Italy in 2003.  We were sitting in a cathedral and listening to an art history lecture by our professor when I snapped the picture her.  I developed the film and image in the darkroom in Cortona, Italy.  Then in 2016 I decided to paint the photograph as an exploration of painting realistic portraits.  I love the symbolism of the black and white and the ambiguity of her gender.  Many viewers have assumed it’s a portrait of a boy.  With all of the discourse surrounding gender at this point in history, I like that the painting is comprised of multi-faceted shades of gray.
